Virginia State Budget Includes $25 million for Virginia Tech-led Commonwealth Cyber Initiative

The newly funded program will leverage Virginia Tech's Data Analytics Center and the Biocomplexity Institute to bring together computer scientists, engineers, and statisticians to meet the research and talent needs of a data-intensive world. As the lead organization of this initiative, Virginia Tech will issue a report to the General Assembly by December 1 to outline next steps for the program.

New Study Targets Effects of Social Media on Collective Action

Research assistant professor Gizem Korkmaz developed the Common Knowledge and Social Networks project to understand how social media influences participation in risky collective action. It is the first time the Biocomplexity Institute has received funding from the Minerva Research Initiative.

Top Researchers Convening to Explore Evidence That Could Change the Way Science Looks at DNA

The Biocomplexity Institute will host a ground-breaking symposium, “Beyond Sequence Alignment,” October 16-17, 2017, to further investigate the possibilities of developing new sequence-to-structure analytics. Leading-edge scientists from across the country will gather to analyze new ways to assess information contained in DNA sequences.

Virginia Tech Leads DARPA Project to Develop Tools for Next Generation Social Science

Making social science experiments scalable to large populations is a major objective of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Next Generation Social Science program. To support this program, the agency has awarded Virginia Tech and four other university partners $3 million to conduct research that will streamline modeling processes, experimental design, and methodology in the social sciences.
