New Study Targets Effects of Social Media on Collective Action

Research assistant professor Gizem Korkmaz developed the Common Knowledge and Social Networks project to understand how social media influences participation in risky collective action. It is the first time the Biocomplexity Institute has received funding from the Minerva Research Initiative.

National Academy of Sciences Committees Tap Top Biocomplexity Institute Affiliates

Charles W. Steger, president emeritus of Virginia Tech, has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Division of Earth and Life Studies (DELS) committee of the National Academy of Sciences. Steger's honor follows closely on the heels of another Biocomplexity Institute affiliate who was named to the National Academy's Social and Behavioral Sciences for National Security Committee, Sallie Keller.

Gizem Korkmaz Presents Outstanding New Faculty Lecture in National Capital Region

Korkmaz's presentation explored how public protests and other forms of collective action are coordinated through social media, applying a game theoretical model to assess when people are likely to participate in movements they encounter online.
