Sallie Keller, Professor of Statistics and Director of the VBI Social and Decision Analytics Laboratory, is chairing the 2014 Virginia Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM) Summit that will focus on the theme of Big Data and the directions/implications of this fast moving topic for science, medicine, industry and business. The pace of data availability and acquisition is accelerating across all sectors of science and society. This is challenging our ability to harness this information for exploration and discovery. Many scientists have created and used big data in their work and there is much to learn from them. Recognizing the enormous scope of this topic, the Program Committee developed an outstanding lineup of speakers who are leaders in three areas leveraging big data. This by-invitation-only meeting promises to be an excellent meeting to learn about how Big Data can expand our knowledge in new ways. See
