Blacksburg, Va., April 15, 2014 -- Rebecca Wattam has been recognized as Scholar of the Week by the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Rebecca Wattam, Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech

Wattam is a senior bioscientist and computational biologist working with parasitology, medical entomology, and comparative genomics.

She has been instrumental in developing, maintaining, and training users on the Pathosystems Resource Integration Center (also known as PATRIC) software. Serving as a Bacterial Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC), PATRIC hosts an information system designed to support the biomedical research community’s work on bacterial infectious diseases by, as Wattam notes, "designing for different users and how they are going to see the data. For example, a computer scientist and a biologist might have very different needs. We let the collaborations guide us."

Read more about her recent travel to train users in South Africa to utilize the PATRIC tool regarding tuberculosis.
