WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 7, 2003 - Congress has appropriated $4.5 million to create a database on biological threats. The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, to be located on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, will be a cooperative effort of several state universities.

Researchers say that bioinformatics, the science of managing and interpreting vast amounts of genetic data, is a key tool for identifying and fighting bioterrorism.

Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.) said that there has been little coordination among the many government and private entities researching biological threats and that the institute would create a one-stop shop for such information.
