BLACKSBURG, Va., Jul. 24, 2003 - VBI Director Bruno Sobral served as a visiting panelist at the NIH sponsored Bioengineering Consortium Symposium (BECON) June 23-24, 2003 in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Sobral’s expertise was highlighted in the “Institutional Administration of Research Teams” breakout session, specifically discussing team science.
Sobral and other panelists addressed factors hindering team science in academia by administration hierarchies. More specifically, the panel looked at the role of administration strategies concerning team science with government agencies, industry and research institutions. The panel focused on real world issues that arise in team science with a staff of multidisciplinary backgrounds. The panelists also discussed how individual success and research can be balanced with team support in a research setting. Consultants, moderators and session coordinators also helped focus the breakout session discussion toward the use of resources to promote team science in a practical environment.
Sobral's contribution and participation on the BECON “Institutional Administration of Research Teams” panel enhanced discussion and ideas from other panelists traveling from the University of Kentucky, NIH, Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles.
