BLACKSBURG, Va., October 12, 2009 - U.S. Representative Rick Boucher (D-VA 9th District) will make a joint announcement with Virginia Tech representatives about significant funding from the National Institutes of Health for research at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech. The press conference will take place at the Virginia Tech Holtzman Alumni Center on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009 at 1:30 p.m in the Alumni Assembly Hall.
Dr. Bruno Sobral, Professor and Director of the CyberInfrastructure Group (CI Group profile; PDF) at VBI (VBI fact sheet; PDF) and Principal Investigator of the funded project, will talk about what the 5-year, $27,670,448 contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases - the largest, one-time federal award in the history of Virginia Tech - means to international research on infectious diseases. Charles W. Steger, president of Virginia Tech, will also speak about the university's commitment to research and innovation at the University.
