Abstract: Dr. Hoover's laboratory focuses on the pathogenesis and intervention for retrovirus and prion infections—in particular feline leukemia virus (FeLV), the feline and simian immunodeficiency viruses (FIV, SIV), and most recently the prion disease chronic wasting disease (CWD) of deer and elk.
These infectious agents cause both important diseases of animals and models for human disease—i.e. leukemia, HIV infection/AIDS, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease, BSE), and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease. In his VTLSS seminar, Dr. Hoover will talk about his studies of CWD in deer and elk and, briefly, the common chord of protein misfolding in prion disease and the major neurodegenerative diseases of humans such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS.
