BLACKSBURG, Va., June 4, 2014 -- The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved the following 2014 VBI faculty promotions:

Dr. Stephen Eubank, Tenure with promotion to professor, population health sciences.

Dr. Achla Marathe, Promotion to professor, agriculture and applied economics

Stephen is the Deputy Director of the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory. While at Los Alamos National Laboratory he played a lead role in developing TRANSIMS, the urban transportation model, EpiSims, the epidemic simulation system and the Urban Infrastructure Suite, which simulates how the behavior of every individual in a large urban region affects interacting physical infrastructures. Since 2005, he has been the PI of the NIH-sponsored program, Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS).

Achla is the lead economist and social scientist in the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory. Prior to working at Virginia Tech she worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory where she specialized in anomaly detection and modeling and simulation of large social systems. Her current research uses online networks and synthetic social networks to study individual and social behavior, and their contribution to social contagions.  She is a co-PI on several highly inter-disciplinary programs such as the NSF-ICES, IARPA-OSI, and DTRA-CBA-DAACDTS programs.

Congratulations to Stephen and Achla!
